Labour's Breastcheck campaign in Westport
The Westport Branch of the Labour Party took 240 signatures last Saturday afternoon calling on the Government to keep to its commitment to extend Breastcheck to Mayo in 2007. The Branch was on the streets of Westport as part of the Labour Party's National Recruitment week which ran from Oct 7 to 14.
According to Cllr Keith Martin of the Westport Branch the issue is a passionate one among the people of the town. “We frequently had queues of people at our stand to sign the petition and people are angry that the service has been available in other areas of the country for years. Every year 600 women die of Breast Cancer, many of these deaths could be prevented if detected early by using the Breastcheck service. There are currently over 9,000 women in Mayo who would be targeted for the Breast Check screening service if it was available here. It is estimated that 65 women a year are dying because of the lack of the Breastcheck Service in areas like the West of Ireland. Each avoidable death is a tragedy but it is especially chilling to think how many of those will be from Mayo or even Westport. The lack of a Breastcheck service is the West is a scandal.”
Anyone wishing to sign the petition can do so by visiting www.westportlabour.com and signing it on-line. For more information on the Breastcheck Petition or about membership of the Westport Branch can call 086 0691182 or e-mail kmartin@cllr.westporttc.ie
