WESTPORT FAIRTRADE CAMPAIGN GATHERING MOMENTUM
Westport Town Council unanimously passed a resolution supporting Westport’s bid to become a Fairtrade Town and pledged to serve only Fairtrade tea and coffee at all of its future meetings and events. The resolution was proposed by Cllr. Keith Martin and seconded on behalf of the Council by Cathaoirleach Cllr. Peter Flynn.
This significant step means that one of the six goals towards becoming a Fairtrade Town has been achieved. In addition, numerous other organisations have made plans to make the switch to fairtrade products since the campaign was launched on February 27th. The Country Market will now serve fairtrade tea and coffee in its café. Architects McGann Scahill and Linden Hall B&B on Altamont Street are making the switch. Ireland West will sell fairtrade products in their offices from now on and the Westport Leisure Centre is exploring the possibility of having a fairtrade concessions machine. André Joyce at the Naturopathic Health Store off James’ Street is the first Westport outlet to sell fairtrade bananas in addition to other fairtrade goods.
Schools have been enthusiastic in their response to the campaign and the Fairtrade Committee looks forward to meeting with more schools over the coming weeks. So far, students at primary schools Holy Trinity, The Quay School and Gaelscoil na Cruaiche are keen to work on Fairtrade projects. Westport Library has agreed to display these projects and projects from other schools anytime after April 14th. The teachers in these schools have also made the switch to Fairtrade products in their staff rooms. In addition, students at Rice College plan to hold a Fairtrade Coffee Morning.
Supervalu and Centra on the Quay displayed fairtrade posters throughout Fairtrade Fortnight and are keen to supply a wider range of fairtrade products in their stores. Ylang Ylang on James’ Street continues to supply its wide range of products.
Finally, the Choose Fairtrade for Westport campaign had a colourful and lively entry in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade thanks to Pollyanna and her Salsa dancers and the help of artist Breda Byrnes. Other organisations also carried Fairtrade posters as part of their entries helping to spread the word that Fairtrade helps develops other communities also.
Over the coming weeks, Fairtrade Committee members will be talking to cafés, restaurants, hotels and other businesses in the town about making the switch to fairtrade.
