Local Government

Local Government in Ireland has deliberately been kept weak and poor by central government since its introduction in 1898 with the Local Government Act(Ireland) being passed by the British parliament.

Irish local government still operates under this and newer acts but none of these acts have ever granted local government the power it needs to act efficiently and effectively as an instrument of the people.

Directly elected Mayors with executive powers.

A portion of income tax diverted directly from the exchequer to the appropriate local authority based on the tax-payers residential address.

Direct power of local councils over education, employment, environment, health, housing and social services.

Absolution of regional authorities.

broadcasting of local council meetings on Internet, community TV and local radio.

Policing should be run at local government level as it is in most other countries.
