Keith "bitterly disappointed" at lack of compromise
Cllr Keith Martin, who has been a very vocal opponent of Westport Town Council’s plans for a new road and bridge in Cloonmonad, says that last week’s council meeting was a missed opportunity for a compromise. Cllr Martin says he is “bitterly disappointed that no compromise was reached over the road and bridge at the meeting. The councillors came so close on several occasions but in the end nothing was changed, the road is going ahead.”
Cllr Martin, a founder member of the “Stop this road” committee, says that all through the recent controversy he has been calling for a suspension of the current plans to allow the examination of the alternatives by planning and traffic specialists. Cllr Martin says he “believes there are alternatives, in access and in the type of development, which will allow the development of Cloonmonad without the road ruining the Railway Line Walk. I am disappointed with the council’s decision to proceed with the project as planned without a cooling off period to examine the alternatives.
“In the end there will be a 20 foot wide road way running all the way from the bridge through wetlands, past Westlands, past Cloonmonad Close, past Harbour Village right down to just short of Quarry Lane. There can be no doubt about the impact of this road on wildlife and on the quality of life of the people of Westport.”
