Martin welcomed to Labour Party
Councillor Keith Martin received a very warm welcome when he was officially welcomed to the Labour party at a special ceremony in the Wyatt Hotel in Westport recently. Members from the four branches of the party in the county and members of the public gathered in the Octagon Room of the Hotel of Friday April 7th to see Keith welcomed into the party fold by Cllr Johnny Mee, Harry Barrett and John J. Tiernan, the chairman of the Westport Branch.
Addressing the crowd Mr Tiernan paid tribute to the Westport Branch for its hard work in keeping the party’s profile high over the recent years. He paid Tribute the Lavelle family who had put so much hard work into the party for decades.
Welcoming Keith Martin to the party he said that the party was entering a new era in Westport and in Mayo. He spoke of Cllr Martin’s achievements on the council since his election in June 2004 and said Cllr Martin was a welcome addition to the party locally and county wide. Mr Tiernan also paid tribute to Harry Barrett who is contesting a seat in Mayo in the up coming election. He said energetic candidates like Harry Barrett and Keith Martin would transform politics in Mayo.
Cllr Johnny Mee said that Labour in Mayo would always have a bright future as long as it could attract “candidates the like of Keith Martin and Harry Barrett.” Cllr Mee said he had followed Cllr Martin’s progress on Westport Town Council since his election and was impressed with his record so far. He said he welcomed Keith into the party and looked forward to working with him.
Harry Barrett, Labour’s Dail Candidate in Mayo said he was delighted to have “this opportunity, on behalf of all the members of the Labour Party in Co. Mayo to welcome Keith into Labour. We are thrilled to have Keith on board as he is one of the brightest, most progressive and hard-working public representatives in this county.
“Keith is joining some great guys here in the Westport Branch. Labour with Keith Martin on board will now present a new, fresh dynamic voice for the people in this county. We will endevour to work hard with Cllr. Mee, to make life better tomorrow for the ordinary, hard working families of this county.
“I now offer you a new voice, a voice that will work hard for the rest of us. The voice of Martin, Mee and Barrett and the hard working members of the Labour party in Mayo.”
Cllr Martin thanked all for their warm welcome and said he would never forget those who had elected him in June 2004. Cllr Martin says he was elected on a strict set of policy aims and that he have worked hard to achieve many of them and would continue to work hard to complete them.
Cllr Martin added “Some have questioned why I have chosen the Labour Party. Well it is more of a homecoming than a choice. My policies locally and nationally are in tandem with the Labour Party and I believe that Labour offers people a better deal and a fairer society.
“I want a change, in this town and in this county. For too long we have tried it their way and in 9 years of unprecedented national prosperity; Mayo and Westport has not gotten their share.
“I look forward to working with Cllr Mee and Harry Barrett and with the members of our branch here in Westport. I want the message to go out from tonight. Labour is working in Westport. I invite the people of Westport to work with us to improve our town, our county and our country for the better.”
