Pond path funding welcomed
Cllr Keith Martin has warmly welcomed the provision of €25,000 for the resurfacing of the path at the pond which was made in Westport Town Council's 2006 Works scheme.
“The Pond walk at the Quay is extremely popular with Covies and visitors alike as it is well-lit, free of traffic and is beautifully situated. However in recent years the path was been eroded by the weather and heavy pedestrian use” says Cllr Martin.
“Over the past year I have had several representations to me from regular walkers who were concerned at the state of the pathway as the poor surface was becoming dangerous and distracting from the enjoyment of walking laps of the Pond. I brought these concerns to the attention of the officials under the `Any Other Business' item on the council's agenda and I am very pleased to see the provision in this year's works schedule for the resurfacing of the path at the Pond.”
Councillor Martin says that the maintenance of paths, roads and streets is one of the most important services provided by Westport Town Council, who have this year put aside the sum of €519,000 for such works. Councillor Martin explains that “this is a large part of our council's annual budget and it is a service we provide well yet we don't hear about until there is a problem.”
“I would also compliment the Town Engineer and the staff for their work in this area. The response by these officials to requests for resurfacing of the Pond pathway shows that local government can respond effectively and immediately to the needs of Westport and its citizens” concluded Cllr Martin.
