Recycling Welcome
A member of Westport Town Council, Independent Councillor Keith Martin has warmly welcomed the introduction of recycling by a private waste management contractor in the town. Bourke Waste Removal have begun operation of their green recycling bins on a rota basis with the traditional blue landfill bin on alternative weeks.
Cllr Martin says recycling is a priority with homeowners in Westport, “it was an issue on the doorsteps during the canvassing of last June and it is still an issue. I had hoped that Mayo County Council would have provided a similar service but it seems that was never planned for.
“It is a shame that those who care about their environment must switch to a private contractor to recycle their waste. While the recycling centre at Newport is state of the art it is inaccessible to those without transport. So for those using Mayo County Council as a refuse collector it is easier to have their waste thrown in a landfill than recycled and that is a shame and reflects badly on them as a public service provider.”
However I warmly welcome the introduction of the green bin recycling by Bourke’s Waste Removal. It will mean a reduction in Mayo’s landfill dumping and allows homeowners in the town to do their bit for the environment. We must all have the opportunity to reduce, re-use and recycle.
