Removal of ad signs - 6/5/06
Labour Councillor Keith Martin of Westport Town Council has welcomed Mayo County Council’s initiative to remove inappropriate and illegal signage from the approach roads to Westport. The initiative began three weeks ago when the council ran advertisements stating that “unauthorised signs and advertising on public roads” would be removed under provisions in the Planning Acts 2000-2004, the Litter Pollution Act 1997 and the Roads Act 1993.
Cllr Martin says that now that the council has given this notice it will shortly begin removing these unauthorised signs or advertisements from the approach roads to the town.
Cllr Martin explained “Subsequently, the owners of signs and advertisements which are removed by the council will have to pay the council the cost of removing the signs in order to recover them, otherwise, the signs will be suitably disposed of by the council.
“This is an important step in removing the unsightly, unnecessary and unsuitable signage from our public roadways. These signs deface our town’s approach roads and send out the wrong impression of our Heritage Town. Within the town boundary, Westport Town Council has begun the process of replacing such signage with more appropriate, less garish information boards under the guidance of the Town Architect. Removing such inappropriate signage will benefit the town’s image and ties-in with the ongoing efforts to maintain our town’s beauty and highlight our heritage” concluded Cllr Martin.
