Disappointment at Bord Pleanala ruling
Councillor Keith Martin of the Stop this Road committee says he is deeply disappointed by An Bord Pleanala’s decision that the controversial road and bridge development in Cloonmonad can go ahead without the requirement of and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
Cllr Martin says the decision by the Bord, that the road and bridge which pass over and adjacent to the Railway Line Walk, can go ahead was ‘unfortunate’. According to the Bord’s inspector it was his opinion that the development “would not be likely to have significant effects on the environment”.
Cllr Martin says that the campaign had explored all possible avenues of action in relation to the road and that the campaign had done its best in the interests of the people of the town and of the town’s environment.
According to Cllr Martin, ‘There will always be questions hanging over this project. Why did the council agree to an EIS in 2001 then not undertake it? Why did the council ignore over 200 submissions on the project in 2001? The lines of appeal may be now closed to us but the issue and the questions will go on as the people will still ask why this road route was chosen over the alternatives. I am disappointed at the decision of the Bord but I am proud of the support the people of Westport gave to our campaign.”
